2025
The 2023 Chardonnay Drake Estate Vineyard was matured for 13 months in 34% new French oak. It has inviting aromas of peach, apricot, honey, roasted almonds and flint. Silky in texture, the medium-bodied palate features open, honey-nut flavors structured by bright acidity, and it has a long, elegant finish. 535 cases were made.

95 - James Suckling

2025
A juicy, full-bodied wine with aromas of pears, white peaches, resinous herbs, spices and Meyer lemons. The palate shows cool salinity, a plush, round mouthfeel and pleasing weight, with phenolic tension and exotic spices at the end. Drink or hold.
Description

Founded in the late 1970s, Williams Selyem has become one of California’s reference-point producers for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, known for low yields, meticulous fruit selection and a restrained yet precise winemaking style. The Drake Estate Vineyard lies in the cool Russian River Valley, where fog influence from the Pacific Ocean and well-drained soils allow for slow, even ripening and the development of both richness and natural acidity. Sustainable farming practices are employed to preserve vineyard health and expression.

Made from 100% Chardonnay, the grapes are hand harvested and fermented with careful temperature control before ageing in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, to build texture, structure and complexity. Full malolactic fermentation is typically carried out to integrate the wine’s natural acidity and enhance its creamy, layered profile. The 2023 shows aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple and citrus oil alongside notes of vanilla, toasted brioche, hazelnut and subtle spice from oak ageing. The palate is rich yet balanced, combining generous orchard fruit with a creamy texture, vibrant acidity and a long, polished finish. Harmonious and expressive, it reflects both the cool-climate precision of the Russian River Valley and the refined oak-influenced style for which Williams Selyem is known, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, lobster, creamy pasta dishes and grilled fish.
