Tolpuddle Vineyard, in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, was planted in 1988 and is named in honour of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, English farm labourers transported to Tasmania in the 1830s. The estate is owned by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith MW, who have invested in low yield viticulture focused on quality from this cool, dry maritime climate. The north east facing slopes, with light silica over sandstone soils, produce balanced, intensely flavoured grapes. Tolpuddle’s viticultural philosophy emphasises soil health and site expression, practicing organic farming although not officialy certified. The region’s long ripening season and low disease pressure nurture concentrated, fine structured fruit unique to Tasmania’s premium cool climate terroir.

The grapes for Tolpuddle's Tasmanian Pinot Noir are hand harvested and fermented using a mix of whole berries and whole bunches to build complexity. After fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barrels for around ten months, approximately one third of which is new, before bottling. Tasting notes include ripe red and dark cherry, raspberry, subtle spice, savoury herb and fine tannins leading to a long finish. This medium-bodied, cool-climate Pinot pairs elegantly with duck, charcuterie, roast game or mushroom dishes. With careful cellaring, it can develop further depth over the next decade.
