Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2018

Roagna is one of the most respected traditional producers in Barbaresco, Piedmont, with a history dating back to the late nineteenth century. The estate was established by Bartolomeo Roagna in 1892 and remains family owned, with the current generation continuing the philosophy of low intervention in both vineyard and cellar. The vineyards are farmed sustainably and by hand, focusing on biodiversity and minimal chemical inputs, though they are not formally certified organic or biodynamic. Paje is one of Roagna’s most historic crus in Barbaresco, owned by the family since 1953. Situated on south east facing slopes of calcareous marl and clay soils intermixed with fossilised marine limestone. The important presence of active limestone in the soil gives this Barbaresco great structure and extraordinary ageing potential.The 2018 vintage in Barbaresco was marked by excellent growing conditions, yielding concentrated fruit with balanced acidity and ageing potential. Production is very limited, with fewer than 7,000 bottles per vintage.

Roagna Barbaresco Paje 2018 is hand harvested and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for an extended period in large, old oak casks known as botti, allowing slow, natural maturation that emphasises texture and terroir expression. In the glass it shows a deep garnet colour with aromas of wild strawberry, rose petal, tar, underbrush and subtle spice. The palate is elegant yet structured, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish. It pairs beautifully with braised beef, roast lamb, risotto with truffles and aged cheeses. Currently drinking with complexity and grace, the 2018 will continue to develop over the next decade or more. Critics have responded enthusiastically to this release, with one describing it as “a beautifully layered, expressive Barbaresco with striking depth and refinement.”
