PSI Ribera del Duero 2023
Produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Alnardo, PSI is the Ribera del Duero project of Peter Sisseck, the visionary Danish winemaker whose legendary Pingus estate transformed the international reputation of the region and became one of Spain’s most collectible wines. Conceived as a way of preserving Ribera del Duero’s old vineyard heritage, PSI was created in partnership with a network of local growers, many of whom farm tiny parcels of old bush-trained Tinto Fino vines that had been at risk of abandonment. Sisseck’s aim was not only to produce a great wine, but also to safeguard these historic vineyards by encouraging sustainable and organic farming practices and paying growers according to quality. The high-altitude vineyards, planted on limestone, clay and gravelly soils, benefit from the region’s extreme continental climate, producing fruit of both concentration and freshness.
Made predominantly from Tinto Fino with a small proportion of Garnacha, PSI is crafted in a style that reflects Peter Sisseck’s philosophy of elegance and terroir expression rather than power alone. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and the wine is matured mainly in large oak vats and seasoned barrels, reducing the influence of new oak and allowing the character of the old vines to shine through. Aromas of red and black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by notes of violet, wild herbs, graphite and delicate spice. The palate is refined and energetic, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a mineral backbone that carries through the long finish. More restrained and transparent than many traditional Ribera del Duero wines, PSI combines the depth of old-vine fruit with a remarkable sense of balance, offering an accessible expression of the winemaking vision that made Peter Sisseck and Pingus world famous.
