Pelerins de Lafon Rochet Saint Estephe 2019
Les Pèlerins de Lafon Rochet 2019 is the second wine of Château Lafon Rochet, a classified Fourth Growth estate (1855 Classification) located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the northern Médoc, Bordeaux. The vineyards sit on gravel terraces over a clay limestone subsoil, with iron rich deposits that contribute structure and depth to the wines. The estate has undergone significant investment and modernisation, with a focus on sustainable vineyard management and reduced chemical intervention and is certified under HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale). The blend is sourced primarily from younger vines within the estate, grown alongside the grand vin parcels in this cool maritime climate.
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is considered outstanding, marked by a warm, dry growing season balanced by beneficial rainfall during the summer, resulting in wines with both concentration and freshness. Les Pèlerins de Lafon Rochet 2019 is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot depending on the parcel. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels for around 12 months, with a lower proportion of new oak than the grand vin. The wine shows blackberry, cassis and plum notes with hints of cedar, graphite and spice. The palate is structured yet approachable, with firm tannins and a savoury finish. It pairs well with roast lamb, beef dishes, game and hard cheeses.
