Produced by Oxer Wines in Rioja Alavesa, Matalaz is an authentic and expressive interpretation of traditional Rioja from one of Spain’s most exciting modern winemakers. Founded by Basque winemaker Oxer Bastegieta, Oxer Wines is dedicated to recovering the character of historic vineyards through old vines, native varieties and a highly terroir focused approach. Based in Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Oxer works with small vineyard parcels located on high altitude limestone soils, where the influence of the Atlantic climate brings freshness, elegance and aromatic complexity to the wines. The vineyards are farmed organically, following regenerative principles that focus on biodiversity, soil health and preserving the natural balance of these historic vineyard ecosystems.
Matalaz 2025 is a traditional Rioja field blend of 70% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, 10% Viura and 10% Graciano, reflecting the diverse plantings that were once common throughout the region’s old vineyards. Crafted with a low intervention philosophy, the wine is fermented with natural yeasts and focuses on expressing the purity and personality of the fruit rather than heavy extraction or oak influence. The name pays tribute to Matalaz, a 17th-century Basque priest who became a symbol of resistance and defence of rural communities. The wine displays aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry alongside notes of violets, dried herbs, spice and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is vibrant and refined, with silky tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. A beautifully authentic Rioja, Matalaz captures the elegance of old vines and Oxer Wines’ commitment to preserving the forgotten identity of traditional Rioja.
