Matsu El Picaro 2023
Produced by Bodega Matsu in Toro, El Pícaro is the youthful expression of the estate’s celebrated trilogy, a project designed to honour the different generations of the region’s remarkable old vineyards. The name, meaning “the rogue” or “the mischievous one”, symbolises the energy and vitality of youth, while the wine itself comes from some of the estate’s younger bush vines, many of which are still between 50 and 70 years old by most standards. Located on the high plateau of Toro, these vineyards are planted on sandy and clay-based soils that escaped the devastation of phylloxera, allowing many ungrafted vines to survive. Farmed organically and with minimal intervention, the estate seeks to preserve the authenticity of the vineyard and the distinctive identity of Tinta de Toro, the local form of Tempranillo.
Made from 100% Tinta de Toro, El Pícaro is fermented with a gentle approach that emphasises freshness and fruit purity, with little reliance on oak to preserve the natural vibrancy of the wine. The result is a more immediate and approachable style than many traditional Toro reds, while still carrying the concentration that the region’s old vines naturally provide. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry and wild blueberry are complemented by notes of violet, liquorice and subtle spice, with a touch of earthy minerality. The palate is juicy and expressive, with supple tannins, lively acidity and a generous core of ripe dark fruit that gives the wine remarkable drinkability. Vibrant, authentic and full of character, El Pícaro offers a fresh interpretation of Toro while remaining deeply connected to the region’s ancient vineyards and winemaking traditions.
