Description

Lioco is a California winery founded in 2005 by Matt Licklider and Kevin O’Connor, focused on producing site driven wines that reflect the diversity of coastal vineyards. Working with growers across Mendocino County and Sonoma, Lioco champions old vines and sustainable farming, often sourcing from organically farmed or responsibly managed sites, though not all are formally certified. Mendocino County is a key North Coast appellation known for its rugged coastline, cooling Pacific fog and wide diurnal temperature shifts, which allow for slow, even ripening. The vineyards are typically planted on well drained gravelly loam and sandy soils that help retain freshness and natural balance in the wines.

Lioco Indica 2020 is a red blend led by Carignan (around 90%) with a smaller proportion of Valdiguié to add brightness and freshness. The fruit is sourced from old vines that deliver concentration and vibrancy to the wine. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts in neutral vessels with gentle extraction, preserving purity and structure. The wine is aged for around 10-12 months in neutral oak barrels, allowing integration without overt oak character. It shows lifted aromas of red cherry, cranberry and wild herbs, with subtle spice and earthy undertones. The palate is fresh and energetic with fine tannins and bright acidity. This versatile wine pairs well with grilled meats, roast vegetables, charcuterie and Mediterranean dishes.
