Kershaw GPS Hemel Ridge Pinot Noir 2019
Kershaw Wines is a boutique winery and the personal project of English born Master of Wine Richard Kershaw, based in the cool climate Elgin Valley of South Africa. Established in 2012, the winery focuses on limited production, site specific wines that are crafted with meticulous precision. Kershaw is especially renowned for producing world class Chardonnay and Syrah that highlight Elgin’s unique terroir. Kershaw focuses on expressing terroir through clonal selection and low intervention viticulture, sourcing grapes from small vineyard parcels with well drained Bokkeveld Shale and Cartref soils that bring mineral precision to the wines. The estate’s winemaking emphasises purity and elegance in every bottle.
The GPS series, standing for "Geographical Parcel Selection", highlights specific parcels to showcase the influence of microclimate, soil and slope on grape expression. The production is small with only 2700 bottles made. The Kershaw GPS Hemel Ridge Pinot Noir 2019 is sourced exclusively from the Hemel Ridge parcel. The grapes were hand harvested and fermented with careful temperature control to preserve freshness. The wine then rested for 11 months in French oak barrels, with around 22% new oak and the remainder being older barrels of various sizes, chosen to support complexity without overwhelming the delicate fruit. The wine shows lifted red cherry and raspberry aromas, savoury spice and earthy undertones with fine tannins and elegant acidity. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, mushroom dishes, pork tenderloin and mildly spiced cuisine, highlighting its delicate yet expressive profile.
