Keermont Syrah Stellenbosch 2020

Produced by Keermont Vineyards in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley of Stellenbosch, Keermont Syrah is a benchmark expression of one of South Africa's most exciting cool-climate wine regions. Established by Mark and Monica Wraith in 2003, the estate was created by assembling a collection of historic vineyard parcels nestled in a spectacular mountain amphitheatre between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountains. Today, Keermont is recognised as one of the Cape's leading producers of terroir-driven wines, with every bottle made exclusively from estate-grown fruit. The Syrah is sourced from several carefully selected vineyard blocks planted between 250 and 400 metres above sea level on decomposed granite, sandstone and clay-rich soils, where cooling maritime influences from nearby False Bay encourage slow, even ripening and exceptional natural freshness. Farmed sustainably with meticulous attention to biodiversity, hand harvesting and low yields, the estate follows a minimal-intervention philosophy that allows each site to express its distinctive character.

Made from 100% Syrah fermented with indigenous yeasts in small open-top fermenters, with each vineyard parcel vinified separately before the final blend. The wine is matured for approximately 18 months in predominantly older French oak barrels, preserving the purity of the fruit while adding subtle complexity and texture. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry are layered with notes of cracked black pepper, violet, lavender, olive tapenade, fynbos and graphite. The palate is medium to full-bodied yet remarkably poised, combining fine-grained tannins with vibrant acidity and a mineral backbone that carries through a long, savoury finish. Elegant, perfumed and beautifully balanced, Keermont Syrah draws inspiration from the great wines of the Northern Rhône while expressing the unmistakable character of Stellenbosch's mountain vineyards. It pairs superbly with roast lamb, venison, grilled beef and slow-cooked Mediterranean dishes.
