El Capricho Tannat 2023

El Capricho’s Tannat comes from the winery’s small vineyard in Villa del Carmen, Durazno, a relatively warm and bright part of Uruguay that gives the variety a different profile from the more familiar wines of Canelones. The seven-hectare vineyard was planted in 2003 and 2004 on Vertisol soils containing fine sand, with calcareous Cretaceous rock beneath and naturally good drainage from the gently undulating terrain. The high levels of sunlight and above-average temperatures help Tannat reach full phenolic maturity before the late-summer rains, producing darker colour but softer, rounder tannins. The estate has been working sustainably since its beginnings, with its grapes certified under Uruguay’s sustainability programme from 2023.

Made from 100% Tannat, this is the more youthful, fruit-driven side of the variety, with ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum alongside violet, subtle herbal notes and a touch of earth. The palate is medium-bodied rather than heavy, with lively acidity and supple tannins giving the dark fruit plenty of freshness. There is a savoury edge through the finish, but the emphasis is on juicy fruit and the distinctive character of Tannat grown in Durazno. It is an easy match for grilled sausages, beef empanadas, burgers, roast pork, lamb chops and grilled vegetables, while its freshness also makes it a good choice for pizza and charcuterie.
