Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Meursault Premier Cru 'Santenots' 2023
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of Burgundy’s most respected family estates, with roots in Volnay extending back to the 12th century and a reputation for producing exceptionally refined, terroir-driven wines. While best known for its elegant Pinot Noir, the domaine also farms prized Chardonnay vineyards including the Premier Cru Santenots in Meursault, where limestone and clay-rich soils provide excellent drainage and impart both minerality and textural depth. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was warm overall, with cool nights that helped preserve aromatic freshness in white grapes, yielding vibrant, nuanced Chardonnays with excellent balance.
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Meursault Premier Cru Santenots 2023 is made from 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested and gently pressed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for approximately 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, typically with a proportion of new oak that adds complexity while supporting fruit purity and texture. Aromas include white peach, citrus blossom, hazelnut and flint with subtle yeast-driven complexity from lees ageing, leading to a palate that is rich yet refined with vibrant acidity and a long mineral finish. It pairs beautifully with seafood in cream sauces, grilled white fish, poultry with beurre blanc and soft cheeses such as triple-cream brie. The 2023 shows impressive intensity and is drinking attractively now with decanting, yet it has the structure to age gracefully over the next 8-12 years, gaining further depth and nuance. Critics have praised recent Santenots bottlings from the domaine as “exquisitely balanced with precision, depth and a crystalline mineral core.”
