Cullen Mangan Vineyard Red Moon 2020

Red Moon is one of Cullen’s most distinctive expressions of Margaret River, sourced from the Mangan Vineyard in Wilyabrup, planted in 1976 on the estate’s ancient gravelly soils. The vineyard sits on an elevated site with deep gravel over clay and receives strong maritime influence from the nearby Indian Ocean. These conditions encourage slow, even ripening while maintaining natural acidity. The 2020 vintage was marked by a relatively cool growing season, producing wines with particularly fine structure, freshness and aromatic definition.

The blend is predominantly Petit Verdot with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, giving Red Moon a character quite different from a conventional Cabernet-led Margaret River red. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with the wine matured in French oak before bottling. The 2020 shows blackberry, mulberry and blackcurrant alongside violets, bay leaf, graphite and earthy spice. Dense but energetic, it has finely grained tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish, with the herbal and mineral complexity becoming increasingly pronounced with air.
