Chateau Cos D'Estournel 2006
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe, classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its vineyards occupy a gravel-covered rise overlooking the Gironde estuary, where deep, well-drained soils over limestone provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2006 vintage was a more classically structured year in Bordeaux, producing wines with freshness, firm tannins and good ageing potential. This bottle is offered with good provenance, an important consideration when buying a mature Bordeaux of this calibre. Confidence in a bottle’s history and handling adds reassurance that it has been carefully preserved and offers the opportunity to enjoy the wine as it has developed over two decades.
The 2006 is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, with 80% new French oak used during maturation. Now showing the benefits of bottle age, it brings together concentrated blackcurrant and dark berry fruit with notes of liquorice, graphite, cedar, tobacco and spice. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides a firm backbone, while the Merlot adds roundness and texture. Its tannins have begun to soften, allowing the savoury, mature character to come through while retaining freshness and structure. A rewarding bottle to enjoy now, particularly alongside roast beef, lamb, venison or other rich, slow-cooked dishes.
