Angus Paul On a Flight of Furious Fancies
Angus Paul is a rising South African winemaker based in Stellenbosch, launching his own label in 2020 after experience at other respected estates including Alheit Vineyards, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, and Reyneke Wines. He champions heritage varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Cinsault, working with old vineyard sites in sub regions like the Polkadraai Hills where vines grow on bony granite soils and are exposed to cooling breezes. His focus is on minimal intervention, hand harvesting and natural fermentations, with sustainable viticulture.
The Angus Paul On a Flight of Furious Fancies 2024 is 100% Chenin Blanc from a single Polkadraai Hills site. Grapes are whole bunch pressed and the cloudy juice is transferred to neutral oak barrels with no additions; fermentation lasts around four weeks, with about half of the barrels completing malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for about 11 months in barrel with no racking or fining, producing a dry, racy style with citrus, green apple, white stone fruit and savoury mineral notes. Its vibrant acidity and texture make it a superb match for oysters, grilled fish, citrus dressed salads or creamy poultry dishes, showcasing the energetic character of Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc.
