Alvear Tres Miradas Cerro Macho 2020
Founded in 1729, Bodegas Alvear is one of Andalucía’s oldest family owned wineries, based in Montilla in the heart of Montilla-Moriles. The Tres Miradas project explores the differences between individual vineyard sites in the Sierra de Montilla, working with old, bush-trained Pedro Ximénez vines grown on the region’s distinctive albariza soils, rich in limestone and chalk. Cerro Macho comes from a steep, south-west facing parcel at approximately 610 metres, among the highest vineyard sites in the area. The vines belong to local growers Juan Antonio and José Espejo, whose traditional viticulture helps preserve the character of this exceptional site.
Made from 100% Pedro Ximénez, the 2020 was harvested by hand, with the grapes pressed directly before fermentation in old American oak barrels previously seasoned with Alvear’s Fino. The wine remained in the same barrels for approximately 30 months under a natural layer of flor yeast, which contributes savoury complexity while preserving the wine’s freshness. Aromas of green and yellow apple, lemon peel and wild fennel mingle with raw almonds, bread dough and chalky mineral notes. Dry, textured and firmly structured, the palate balances ripe fruit with lively acidity, a subtle saline edge and a long, savoury finish. Serve with seafood, sashimi, oysters, grilled fish or delicate tapas.
