Hécula is produced by Bodegas Castaño, a family owned winery based in the Yecla DO in south east Spain, a region renowned for old vine Monastrell. The estate has been run by several generations of the Castaño family and is a leading producer in the area. Vineyards are located at altitude on limestone rich soils with sandy and stony elements, providing good drainage and concentrating flavour. The hot, dry Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal variation allows full ripening while retaining balance. The estate follows sustainable farming practices, with many vineyards certified organic and a strong focus on preserving old bush vines. During the 2018 vintage the winery was transitioning to becoming fully certified organic which they gained in 2019.

Hécula Monastrell 2018 Magnum is made from 100% Monastrell sourced from old bush vines. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel before ageing for around 6 months in French and American oak barrels, adding structure and subtle spice while maintaining fruit intensity. The wines go through no fining or filtering before bottling. The 2018 vintage produced ripe, concentrated wines with good balance. The wine shows aromas of blackberry, plum and black cherry, with notes of liquorice, spice and cocoa. The palate is full bodied with ripe tannins and a smooth, warming finish. It pairs well with grilled meats, lamb, stews and mature cheeses.
