Le Macchiole is a pioneering estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany, founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli with the ambition to make terroir driven single varietal wines from international grapes. The estate is widely recognised for its meticulous vineyard work and long standing commitment to organic farming, having farmed organically since 2002 with hand harvesting and manual sorting to ensure quality and balance. The vineyards for Messorio are primarily located on well drained gravelly and sandy soils typical of the Bolgheri hills, benefitting from Mediterranean breezes and a warm coastal climate that aids full, even ripening. The 2020 vintage was marked by a warm growing season tempered by moderate late summer conditions, producing grapes with concentrated fruit and balanced acidity. The wine is made in a style that respects traditional methods while embracing careful modern practice, and is considered suitable for vegans.

Le Macchiole Messorio 2020 is a 100% Merlot, hand picked and fermented with extended maceration of around 20–25 days in concrete and stainless steel tanks to extract depth and structure. After fermentation the wine is aged for approximately 18 months predominantly in new French oak barrels, with a small proportion matured in amphorae in some parcels, followed by additional bottle ageing prior to release. In the glass it displays rich ruby colour with intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, subtle spice, cardamom and graphite. The palate is full bodied and richly textured, with layered dark fruit, fine, integrated tannins and a long, persistent finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, braised beef, game and rich stews, as well as aged cheeses. This wine is already compelling to drink and has the structure to continue ageing over the next 15–20 years.
