Description

Domaine de Trévallon is one of the most iconic estates in Provence, founded in 1973 by Éloi Dürrbach at the foot of the Alpilles mountains near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Planted against conventional wisdom with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the estate quickly gained a cult following for producing wines of remarkable individuality, leading it to be classified outside the traditional appellation system. The 17 hectares of north-facing vineyards lie on rugged slopes of limestone and blue marl with very stony, well-drained soils that bring freshness and minerality despite the Mediterranean climate. The vineyards have been farmed organically since inception, without herbicides or pesticides, emphasising low yields and deep-rooted vines. The 2023 vintage in Provence benefited from warm conditions balanced by sufficient freshness, producing wines of ripeness, structure and notable precision.

Domaine de Trévallon Rouge 2023 is a distinctive blend of approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah, fermented with whole bunches using indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention. Harvesting is done by hand. Whole bunches ferment without destemming, with indigenous yeast and undergo a long maceration process (roughly 3 weeks). Ageing unfolds slowly over two years in large oak foudres of 25 to 35 hl. Light sulphur additions accompany this long rest; one racking occurs at the end of the first winter, followed by blending in the autumn of the second year. Fining is done with fresh egg whites, two months before bottling. The wine is not filtered. It shows aromas of blackcurrant, wild blackberry, cedar, liquorice and garrigue herbs, with subtle notes of spice and earth. The palate is structured yet refined, with firm, ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish. It pairs well with roast lamb, game, beef and Provençal dishes. While approachable with decanting, it is built for long ageing and will develop over 15-25 years. The 2023 has been highly acclaimed, with scores of 96–97 points reported, described as “a structured, balanced, and deeply noble wine” reflecting both power and finesse.
