Domaine du Nozay is a family run estate based around a 17th-century château near Sainte-Gemme-en-Sancerrois in France’s Loire Valley. Established in 1970 by Baron Philippe de Benoist and later developed by his son Cyril, the domaine has become one of the leading biodynamic producers in Sancerre. The vineyards are certified organic since 2011 and biodynamic since 2017, with farming focused on soil health, biodiversity and minimal intervention. The wines are considered vegan friendly, with no animal-derived fining agents typically used. The 2023 vintage in Sancerre produced expressive Sauvignon Blanc wines with excellent aromatic purity, balanced acidity and generous fruit thanks to a warm growing season tempered by cool nights. Domaine du Nozay’s vineyards are planted on the famed Terres Blanches soils of Kimmeridgian marl and limestone, rich in fossilised marine sediments, giving the wines their signature mineral tension, freshness and ageing potential.

Domaine du Nozay Sancerre 2023 is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from several estate parcels surrounding the château. Fermentation takes place with careful temperature control and minimal intervention to preserve purity and terroir expression, with ageing carried out primarily in stainless steel and terracotta vessels for around 10 to 12 months depending on the cuvée. The wine shows aromas of pink grapefruit, lemon zest, white flowers, peach and exotic fruits layered with chalky minerality and subtle spice. The palate is textured yet vibrant, with refreshing acidity and a long saline finish. It pairs beautifully with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, asparagus, goat’s cheese and fresh summer dishes. Drinking superbly now, it should continue to develop added complexity over the next three to six years.
