Cuilleron Saint Joseph Serines Rouge 2023
More than simply a Saint-Joseph Syrah, Serines is a tribute to the traditional identity of the Northern Rhône’s most historic vineyards. The name refers to the old local selection of Syrah known as Serine, valued for its naturally lower yields, smaller berries and ability to produce wines of remarkable perfume, finesse and complexity. Yves Cuilleron has long been one of the region’s most respected producers, with a deep connection to the vineyards around Chavanay and a commitment to expressing the individuality of each site. Sourced from carefully selected hillside parcels in Saint-Joseph, this wine reflects the appellation’s granite-rich soils, steep slopes and demanding vineyard conditions, where the combination of poor soils and careful farming produces Syrah with both concentration and elegance. Rather than pursuing power, Cuilleron’s approach highlights purity, freshness and the distinctive character of traditional Rhône Syrah.
Made from 100% Syrah from traditional Serine vines, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in French oak, allowing the fruit and vineyard character to remain at the forefront. The bouquet reveals the classic Northern Rhône profile of blackberry, black cherry and plum layered with violet, cracked black pepper, smoked herbs, olive tapenade, liquorice and graphite-like minerality. The palate combines depth with refinement, offering silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects its granite origins. Elegant rather than heavy, Serines captures the balance that makes great Saint-Joseph so compelling: aromatic complexity, mineral freshness and the ability to evolve beautifully with time. It pairs superbly with roast lamb, grilled meats, game, charcuterie, mushroom dishes and mature cheeses.
