Description

Representing Yves Cuilleron’s interpretation of the northern slopes of Côte-Rôtie, Madinière is a classic expression of the appellation’s elegance, perfume and mineral character. Sourced from around five hectares of carefully selected vineyards in the northern Côte-Rôtie sector, the cuvée is shaped by steep south and southeast-facing slopes, where poor schist soils force the vines to produce naturally concentrated fruit while preserving freshness and finesse. The name Madinière refers to the stream running at the foot of these vineyards, with the surrounding parcels reflecting the rugged landscape that defines the Côte Brune side of the appellation. Based in Chavanay, just south of Côte-Rôtie, Yves Cuilleron has an exceptional understanding of these demanding hillside vineyards, crafting wines that combine traditional Rhône character with remarkable precision. The 2023 vintage was a warm and generous year in the Northern Rhône, producing wines with ripe fruit, supple tannins and expressive aromatics while maintaining the freshness required for ageing.

Made from 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier, following the traditional Côte-Rôtie approach, Madinière 2023 was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak to enhance complexity while preserving the purity of the vineyard expression. The nose is immediately captivating, showing layers of blackberry, black cherry and raspberry alongside violet, peony, cracked black pepper, olive tapenade, liquorice, smoked herbs and subtle mineral notes. On the palate, the wine combines the depth and structure of northern Côte-Rôtie with a refined, silky texture, offering polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish. The small addition of Viognier brings extra floral lift and aromatic finesse, balancing the intensity of Syrah with elegance and perfume. Approachable in its youth but built to evolve beautifully, this is a superb example of how Cuilleron captures the sophistication of Côte-Rôtie in a wine of remarkable purity and balance. A perfect match for grilled lamb, côte de boeuf, duck, game, charcuterie and mature cheeses.
