Description

Released after extended bottle ageing at the domaine, this rare Chaillets 2013 offers a unique opportunity to experience Condrieu at a stage of maturity that is rarely seen. Chaillets is one of Condrieu’s most celebrated historic vineyard sites, a steep south-facing slope above the Rhône Valley planted on poor, decomposed granite soils known locally as “arzelle”. These shallow, mineral soils naturally limit yields and force the vines to dig deep, producing Viognier with remarkable concentration, aromatic intensity and a distinctive saline freshness. The vineyard’s exceptional exposure provides the warmth needed for Viognier to ripen fully, while the granite terroir preserves tension and elegance. Yves Cuilleron has long been one of the leading guardians of this unique landscape, crafting wines that express not only the perfume of the grape but also the personality of each individual hillside. The cooler, later 2013 vintage produced a more classical style of Condrieu, favouring precision, freshness and longevity over sheer richness.

Made from 100% Viognier, Chaillets 2013 was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak before significant bottle ageing. After more than a decade, the wine has developed the complexity that distinguishes truly great Condrieu, moving beyond youthful peach and floral aromas towards layers of dried apricot, quince, orange peel, acacia honey, chamomile, toasted almond, ginger and subtle spice. The palate remains beautifully energetic, combining the silky texture and generosity typical of Viognier with the mineral tension and saline freshness provided by the granite soils. Elegant, savoury and deeply nuanced, this is a mature Condrieu focused on harmony and finesse rather than power. A superb companion to lobster, scallops, turbot, roast poultry, creamy sauces, aged cheeses and refined Mediterranean cuisine.
