Weninger Kekfrankos 2020
Weingut Weninger is a family run estate known for biodynamic viticulture in both Austria’s Burgenland and neighbouring Sopron in Hungary. Led by Franz Weninger, the winery farms vineyards on diverse soils, including mineral slate, rock, loam and limestone, helping express terroir in every wine. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic and makes wines that are vegan friendly.
The 2020 Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) is made from 100% Kékfrankos grapes from sites around Balf/Sopron and Horitschon/Ritzing, grown on mineral slate, rock and loam soils. Grapes were hand harvested and underwent spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and wooden vats, followed by around 24 months ageing in 500 litre barrels with natural malolactic fermentation, giving the wine texture and depth. Medium bodied with vibrant acidity, it shows dark berry fruit, cherry and subtle spice with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Its balanced profile pairs well with grilled meats, game, stews and mature cheeses.
