Description

Viña Amézola is a family owned estate based in Rioja Alta, one of the most highly regarded subregions of Rioja, known for producing elegant, age worthy wines. Run by the Amézola de la Mora family, the estate was among the first in Rioja to estate bottle its production. Vineyards are located around Torremontalbo and Hormilla at moderate altitude, benefiting from a continental climate with Atlantic influence, giving freshness and balance. Soils are predominantly clay limestone with some alluvial elements, contributing structure and finesse. The estate follows sustainable vineyard practices with careful canopy management and manual harvesting. The 2019 vintage in Rioja was excellent, offering ripe fruit, good concentration and balanced acidity.

Viña Amézola Crianza 2019 Magnum is typically composed of around 85% Tempranillo and 15% Garnacha. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel, followed by ageing for approximately 12 months in a mix of American and French oak barrels, and further bottle ageing before release. The style leans towards a more modern expression of Rioja, with a focus on fruit purity balanced by well integrated oak rather than overtly oxidative character. The wine shows notes of red cherry, blackberry and plum, alongside vanilla, spice and light toast. The palate is smooth and structured with fine tannins and fresh acidity. It pairs well with roast lamb, grilled meats, tapas and aged cheeses.
