Valdespino Don Gonzalo Oloroso VOS
Valdespino is one of the oldest Sherry houses in Jerez, with a history dating back to 1430 and a reputation for producing some of the region’s most terroir driven wines. Now part of the Estévez Group, the bodega continues to focus on traditional methods and single vineyard sourcing, particularly from the renowned Macharnudo Alto pago. This site is prized for its albariza soils, a chalky limestone that retains moisture and supports balanced vine growth in the hot, Atlantic influenced climate. Viticulture is largely traditional with an emphasis on sustainability, though not formally certified organic. As a VOS classification, this wine is a blend of many vintages aged over time rather than from a single year.
Valdespino 20 Year Old Oloroso Don Gonzalo is made from 100% Palomino and is fortified early to prevent flor formation, leading to full oxidative ageing. The wine matures in a traditional solera system in seasoned American oak casks for an average of over 20 years. This long ageing develops deep concentration and complexity. It shows aromas of walnut, dried fig, toffee, spice and leather, with a rich, powerful palate balanced by freshness. It is drinking exceptionally well now and, like most aged Sherries, remains stable after opening. It pairs well with game, braised meats and strong cheeses. The wine has received high critical acclaim, often scoring around 95 points, described as a “deeply complex and beautifully balanced Oloroso with remarkable intensity.”
