Description

Based in Baniewice in West Pomerania, Winnica Turnau is one of Poland’s leading modern wineries, established by the Turnau family on two parcels totalling 37 hectares. Chardonnay thrives on the vineyard’s gently rolling moraine hill, where sandy-clay and clay soils are moderately compact and permeable. The site benefits from Atlantic and Baltic influences and proximity to the Oder, creating a long growing season that allows Chardonnay to ripen while retaining naturally high acidity. The 2022 season was particularly favourable for extended ripening: after a dry spring and warm, rainy summer, a dry autumn with moderate temperatures allowed the later varieties to mature slowly and evenly.

Fermented and matured for a full year in barrique, using a combination of mostly oak and partly acacia barrels, the wine develops richness and texture without losing the lively character of its Polish climate. The 2022 shows ripe pear, sweet apple and tropical fruit alongside roasted almond, butter and white pepper. Rich and creamy yet distinctly juicy, it balances its barrel-derived texture with 6.8 g/l acidity, finishing long and savoury. Its combination of cool-climate freshness and carefully judged wood ageing makes it a particularly compelling example of Poland’s emerging potential with Chardonnay.
