Tenuta Baroni Campino Sassi Rossa 2021
Tenuta Baroni Campanino was founded in 2006 in the hills above Assisi, Umbria, within the protected Monte Subasio Natural Park. The estate’s vineyards sit at around 600-900 metres above sea level, surrounded by woodland and rich biodiversity. Winemaker Michele Lorenzetti follows biodynamic farming practices, working with the landscape and its natural balance rather than relying on intensive vineyard treatments. Sassi Rosa takes its name from the region’s distinctive pink Assisi stone, which forms part of the local mountain landscape. The high-altitude setting helps Sangiovese retain freshness and acidity, giving this Umbrian red a character quite different from the fuller, warmer expressions found elsewhere in Italy.
Made from 100% Sangiovese, the grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete, with around ten days of skin contact to develop colour, aroma and structure. The wine is bottled without filtration, keeping the style close to the character of the grapes and vintage. Fresh cherry and other red fruits lead the nose, followed by hints of tomato leaf, dried herbs and earthy spice. Bright acidity and well integrated tannins give the palate energy and balance, with a savoury finish that makes it especially suited to food. Serve with pork, sausages, wild boar stew, tomato based pasta or roasted vegetables.
