Szaszi Olaszrizling St Georges Hill 2024
Szászi Birtok is one of the pioneering organic estates of Hungary, established by Endre Szászi on the volcanic slopes of Szent György-hegy in the Badacsony wine region. The estate farms around 18 hectares across Szent György-hegy, Szigliget, Hajagos and Lesencetomaj, with the Szent György-hegyi vineyards particularly prized for their volcanic terroir. The 2024 Olaszrizling comes from three parcels on the mountain, where mineral-rich volcanic soils and the moderating influence of Lake Balaton contribute depth, freshness and a distinctive saline character.
Made from 100% Olaszrizling, the 2024 is produced from organically farmed vineyards and undergoes spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks before ageing for three months in used 500-litre oak barrels. The larger format and older oak allow the wine to gain texture without masking its mineral character. Rich yet fresh, it shows ripe apple, white peach and pear alongside wild flowers, acacia honey, subtle spice and a gentle saline note. Rounded and lightly creamy, with fine acidity and a delicate bitter edge, it pairs beautifully with freshwater fish, roast poultry, pork, creamy dishes, mushrooms and lightly spiced Asian cuisine.
