Selvapiana Pomino Villa di Petrognano 2021
Selvapiana is one of Tuscany’s historic family estates, established in 1827 and today managed by the Giuntini family in the Chianti Rùfina zone. The estate farms around 60 hectares of vineyards organically and sustainably, including leased plots at Villa Petrognano in the tiny Pomino DOC on the cool hills near the Apennines. These vineyards sit on well drained alluvial, stony and clay-rich soils, benefitting from elevations typically found at around 400 to 650 metres above sea level, benefitting from a cooler climate due to their hillside and foothill position near the Apennines. This higher altitude contributes to fresher acidity, longer hangtime and aromatic complexity in the fruit compared with lower lying Tuscan vineyards. Pomino is one of the earliest recognised Tuscan wine regions, producing elegant, fresher red wines with lively acidity and distinct mountain character.
The Selvapiana Villa di Petrognano Pomino Rosso 2021 is a blend of approximately 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, grapes harvested separately then fermented with careful extraction and matured for around 18 months in large casks and oak barriques. The wine displays wild cherry, blackberry, earthy spice, gentle smoke and balanced structure with refined tannins and freshness. Approachable now, it will develop further complexity over the next few years. Pair with bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted game, aged pecorino or rich ragù for a classic Tuscan match.
