San Leonardo IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti 2007
Tenuta San Leonardo is one of Italy’s most revered estates, located in Trentino in the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, nestled in the Alpine foothills north of Lake Garda. The property has been owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family for over three centuries, with modern reputation established under Marchese Mario Guerrieri Gonzaga, who introduced Bordeaux varieties in the 1970s after studying at Sassicaia. The vineyards lie at around 150-200m elevation on alluvial soils composed of gravel, sand and limestone, which provide excellent drainage and contribute finesse and aromatic clarity. Farming follows sustainable and organic principles and the estate is certified organic. The 2007 vintage in Trentino was warm and balanced, producing wines of concentration, structure and excellent ageing potential.
San Leonardo 2007 is a classic Bordeaux inspired blend typically composed of approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère and 10% Merlot. Each variety is fermented separately in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing for around 24 months in French oak barriques, mostly used, and further extended bottle ageing before release. The wine shows complex aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, graphite and dried herbs, with hints of spice and leather from maturation. The palate is elegant and structured, with refined tannins and a long, harmonious finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, venison, braised beef and mature cheeses. Now fully mature, the 2007 is drinking superbly while still capable of further evolution over the next decade. It received 95 points from Vinous, with Antonio Galloni describing it as “a total knock-out” and praising its balance, finesse and exceptional length.
