Rustenberg Peter Barlow 2022
Rustenberg is one of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished estates, established in 1682 at the foot of the Simonsberg in the Stellenbosch wine region. The estate is committed to sustainable farming, with many parcels managed using organic principles, nurturing healthy soils. The vineyards are made up of decomposed granite, shale and alluvial deposits that give structure and minerality to the fruit. The vineyards benefit from cooling south easterly breezes, allowing slow, even ripening. The Peter Barlow, derives it’s name from the man who bought the property and lovingly restored it to become a South African icon in the wine industry. Being made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the oldest vineyard on the estate, the Peter Barlow is a rich, robust varietal example of the exceptional quality and ageability of Cabernet made on the Estate and in the Simonsberg region.
The Rustenberg Peter Barlow 2022 is a classic Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation takes place in stainless tanks, followed by maturation in French oak barrels for around 20 months in French oak barrels (61% new, 39% 2nd and 3rd fill), building complexity and refined structure. The wine shows intense cassis, black cherry and cedar aromas, with notes of tobacco and spice, firm yet polished tannins and a long finish. It pairs beautifully with grilled beef, roast lamb, rich stews and mature hard cheeses. A highly collected wine which will age gracefully under the correct cellaring conditions.
