Description

Produced by Roka in the village of Kog in Slovenian Styria (Štajerska Slovenija), this Blaufränkisch reflects the vision of Liam and Sinéad Cabot, a couple originally from the west of Ireland who established their small family estate after recognising the remarkable potential of Slovenia’s cool-climate vineyards. Farming just two hectares sustainably, the Cabots work with great respect for the surrounding landscape, allowing the region’s unique terroir to define the character of their wines. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes of marl and sandstone soils, where the cool Alpine-Pannonian climate and significant day-to-night temperature variation encourage slow ripening, producing Blaufränkisch of exceptional freshness, aromatic purity and natural elegance. Crafted in very limited quantities, the wine embodies Roka’s commitment to authentic, terroir-driven winemaking.

Made from 100% Blaufränkisch, the wine is fermented with minimal intervention before ageing in oak barrels to enhance structure while preserving the variety’s vibrant fruit and spice. Aromas of sour cherry, wild blackberry and blackcurrant are layered with notes of cracked black pepper, violet, dried herbs and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a savoury mineral edge that carries through a long, refined finish. Combining bright red and dark fruit with freshness and precision, Roka Blaufränkisch is an elegant expression of one of Central Europe’s great red grape varieties, pairing beautifully with roast duck, grilled pork, game dishes and mature cheeses.
