Ribera del Cuarzo Clasico Malbec 2022
Ribera del Cuarzo is a Patagonian project in Argentina involving the Catena family of Catena Zapata and the Menéndez Ross family. The estate works with old vineyards, many over 40 years old, across Río Negro in areas such as Mainqué and Cervantes. Viticulture focuses on sustainability and minimal intervention. The semi-desert climate, with warm days and cool nights, ensures slow ripening and freshness. Soils are alluvial, with sandy and clay components that provide balance, structure and a distinctive mineral edge to the wines.
Ribera del Cuarzo Malbec Clásico 2022 is a blend of around 93% Malbec and 7% Merlot from old vines. After a short cold maceration, fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel with gentle extraction, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for around 6–8 months, mainly in French oak with some concrete. It shows notes of blackberry, plum, herbs and spice, with fresh acidity and fine tannins. It pairs well with grilled meats, lamb and hearty dishes, and is suitable for vegans.
