2022
The 2020 Sorte Antiga is only the third vintage of this skin-contact white from an old plot of Godello planted in 1920. It fermented with skins in a 1,500-liter oak vat for 30 days and matured with lees in used 500-liter French oak barrels for nine months, which is a shorter élevage than the 2019. Surprisingly enough, this is lower in alcohol than the equivalent 2019 and the lowest of all the 2019 and 2020 wines. It also has a low pH and high acidity. It feels fresher and more elegant than the 2019, lighter on its feet and more nuanced with beautiful aromatics of wild herbs. The effect of the skins is even subtler. This is their oldest vineyard, and they have managed to extract the nuance of the grapes through the fermentation with the skins, something they have improved each vintage. Godello can be very vegetal and unripe, so the challenge to make a skin-contact white is high. The palate here is vibrant and refreshing. This is very elegant, lightyears from the rusticity of many skin-contact whites. The higher altitude and the older vines made for a superb wine in 2020 here. This is also young but approachable, a skin-contact white that keeps its identity. 890 bottles were filled in July 2021. Drink 2022 - 2029.
Description

Produced by Rafael Palacios in Valdeorras, Galicia, Sorte Antiga is one of Spain’s most sought-after white wines and a benchmark expression of old-vine Godello. After establishing his reputation through the renowned Palacios family of Rioja, Rafael Palacios moved to Valdeorras in the early 2000s, recognising the extraordinary potential of the region’s granite soils and historic Godello vineyards. Sorte Antiga comes from a tiny parcel of exceptionally old vines planted at altitude in the Bolo area, where decomposed granite soils, a continental climate and significant diurnal variation create wines of remarkable tension, concentration and longevity. Farmed organically with meticulous attention to detail, the vineyard produces only minute quantities, making the wine one of the rarest bottlings in Galicia.

Made from 100% Godello, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on its lees in large oak foudres, a regime designed to build texture and complexity without overshadowing the character of the vineyard. The outstanding 2020 vintage combines concentration with exceptional freshness, resulting in a wine of both power and precision. Aromas of citrus oil, white peach and ripe pear are layered with notes of fennel, wild herbs, crushed granite and subtle smoky nuances. The palate is intensely mineral and finely structured, with remarkable depth, vibrant acidity and a saline persistence that seems to echo the granite soils from which it originates. Still youthful, despite its bottle age, Sorte Antiga possesses the balance and concentration to evolve for well over a decade, placing it firmly among the great white wines of modern Spain.
