Pizzorno Espumoso Brut Nature Reserva NV
Pizzorno’s Espumoso Brut Nature Reserva shows a different side to the family estate, which has been making wine in Canelones since 1910. The winery is based in Canelón Chico, where the vineyards benefit from the Atlantic influence of Uruguay’s temperate climate. The estate’s soils are predominantly shallow loamy-clay with calcareous elements, and vineyard management focuses on maintaining healthy vines and balanced yields while limiting the need for inputs. The sparkling wine is made from equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, combining the red grape’s structure and subtle fruit weight with Chardonnay’s acidity and freshness. As a Brut Nature, it receives no dosage after disgorgement, leaving the wine completely dry.
Made by the traditional method, the wine undergoes its second fermentation in bottle before spending 24 months ageing on its lees, developing greater texture and complexity while retaining the freshness of the fruit. Lemon, green apple and white pear are complemented by delicate red-fruit notes, citrus blossom, freshly baked bread and a subtle mineral character. The mousse is fine and persistent, with bright acidity carrying the wine through to a crisp, savoury finish. The combination of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay gives it more substance than a simple aperitif sparkling, making it particularly good with oysters, prawns, ceviche, sushi, fried seafood and fresh goat’s cheese. Serve well chilled.
