Pieropan Passito della Rocca 2001 50cl
Produced by Pieropan in the Soave Classico zone of Veneto, Passito della Rocca 2001 is a rare and historic sweet wine from one of the region’s most respected family estates. Founded in 1880, Pieropan is widely recognised for elevating Garganega-based wines through careful vineyard work and a strong focus on terroir expression. The vineyards lie on volcanic basalt and limestone rich soils in the steep hills around Soave, where warm days and cooling alpine influenced nights allow slow, balanced ripening. Grapes for this passito style wine are selected from the finest hillside parcels and dried to concentrate sugars, acidity and flavour, producing exceptional intensity and longevity. The 2001 vintage has now reached profound maturity after more than two decades of ageing.
Made primarily from Garganega with a small proportion of Trebbiano di Soave depending on the selection, the grapes are harvested late and dried for several months in traditional drying rooms to concentrate flavour before gentle pressing and fermentation. Fermentation is slow and carefully managed, often stopping naturally to retain residual sugar, followed by extended ageing in small oak barrels and long bottle maturation. With over twenty years of development, the wine shows complex aromas of dried apricot, candied citrus peel and fig alongside honey, caramel, toasted almond, saffron, tobacco and spice. The palate is rich, silky and deeply layered, balanced by vibrant acidity and a refined mineral backbone. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses, almond based pastries, dried fruit desserts and foie gras.
