95 - Decanter

2025
Ornellaia owns 13 hectares of white varieties, and this 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the prime Bellaria vineyard at around 100 metres above sea level on limestone soils. ‘An original expression of this grape variety’, is how Marco Balsimelli describes it. Well balanced and very fresh, it has good body and plenty of energy, with ripe notes of guava, apricot and mango. The oak vinification with batonnage lends a creamy tone and texture but it remains poised throughout, with a sapid, mineral finish. (JB)

2026
The last year with Olga Fusari as winemaker, and a fabulous vintage to sign her out with, steel and slate, reductive gunsmoke aromatics, cradled by finely tuned tannins. Rinses the palate with grip and juice, elerflower, preserved citrus, just a fabulous wine that deserves its place among the great Sauvignon Blancs of the world.
Description

Produced by Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in Bolgheri, Ornellaia Bianco 2023 is one of Italy’s most prestigious white wines and a compelling demonstration of the estate’s pursuit of excellence beyond its iconic reds. First released in 2013, the project was created to explore the potential of the finest white vineyard sites within the estate, particularly the elevated Bellaria parcel, where limestone-rich soils, cooling sea breezes and significant diurnal temperature variation preserve freshness and aromatic precision. Under the stewardship of the Frescobaldi family, Ornellaia has become one of the world’s most respected wine estates, and Ornellaia Bianco reflects the same meticulous parcel selection and uncompromising attention to detail that define the flagship red wine.

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2023 vintage is vinified with exceptional precision before ageing on its fine lees in a combination of French oak barriques, tonneaux and amphorae, building texture and complexity while preserving the variety’s purity and freshness. Aromas of grapefruit peel, citrus blossom and white peach are layered with notes of exotic fruit, white pepper, fresh herbs and crushed stone, complemented by subtle hints of roasted hazelnut from the élevage. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably poised, combining vibrant acidity with a saline mineral backbone and a long, persistent finish. More reminiscent of a great age-worthy white Bordeaux than a conventional Sauvignon Blanc, Ornellaia Bianco 2023 possesses both immediate appeal and the structure to evolve gracefully for a decade or more.
