Produced by Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in Bolgheri, Ornellaia 2023 is the latest chapter in the story of one of Italy’s most iconic wines. Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the estate helped establish Bolgheri as a world-class fine wine region, demonstrating the extraordinary potential of Bordeaux varieties on Tuscany’s Mediterranean coast. Today, under the ownership of the Frescobaldi family, Ornellaia remains one of the benchmarks of the Super Tuscan movement, combining meticulous vineyard management with a parcel-by-parcel approach to vinification. The estate’s diverse soils of gravel, clay, sand and marine sediments, together with cooling sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian coast, provide the foundation for wines of remarkable complexity, elegance and longevity. The 2023 growing season required rigorous vineyard work and careful fruit selection, rewarding precision and patience with a wine of exceptional balance and freshness.

The final blend comprises 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, each variety vinified separately before ageing in French oak and subsequent bottle maturation. In keeping with the character of the vintage, the wine displays a greater emphasis on finesse and aromatic definition than sheer power. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry are layered with notes of Mediterranean herbs, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and sweet spices. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably polished, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a mineral freshness that carries through the long, persistent finish. Combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the generosity of Merlot and the aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc, Ornellaia 2023 is a refined and age-worthy expression of Bolgheri that will continue to evolve gracefully over the coming decades.
