Produced by Niepoort, one of Portugal’s most respected Port houses, Crusted Port is a traditional style of Vintage Port that showcases the depth, complexity and ageing potential of the Douro Valley’s historic vineyards. Founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, the family-owned house has remained one of the great names in Port, combining centuries of tradition with a distinctive focus on elegance, freshness and terroir expression. Niepoort works with old vineyards across the Douro, where steep schist slopes, dry continental conditions and carefully preserved native grape varieties create wines of remarkable character and longevity. Unlike many large-volume Port producers, Niepoort has built its reputation around small-scale production and a strong commitment to traditional craftsmanship.
Niepoort Crusted Port is a blend of wines from different exceptional vintages, bottled unfiltered and aged in bottle before release, following the traditional approach that gives the style its name. Produced from a selection of indigenous Douro varieties, including classic Port grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cão and Tinta Roriz, the wine develops complexity through extended bottle ageing rather than long oxidative maturation in wood. It displays aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by violet, cocoa, spice, dried fruit and subtle nutty notes. On the palate, it is rich yet elegant, with firm tannins, vibrant freshness and a long, refined finish. With excellent ageing potential, Niepoort Crusted Port offers much of the character and complexity of Vintage Port at a more accessible level, making it a superb partner for blue cheeses, dark chocolate desserts, dried fruits and contemplative after-dinner drinking.
