Description

Produced by Marchesi Mazzei at the historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Castellina in Chianti, Tuscany, Vicoregio 36 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 is one of the estate’s most ambitious expressions of Sangiovese. The Mazzei family has been making wine in Tuscany for over six centuries, with their history at Castello di Fonterutoli dating back to 1435. Today, the estate is recognised as one of the leading names in Chianti Classico, combining generations of tradition with extensive research into the region’s most important grape variety. Vicoregio 36 represents decades of work dedicated to preserving Sangiovese’s genetic diversity, with the vineyard planted using 36 different Sangiovese biotypes selected from historic vines. Located at around 420 metres above sea level, the vineyard benefits from the unique terroir of Castellina in Chianti, with limestone-rich soils, excellent exposure and a climate that allows slow, balanced ripening and exceptional aromatic development.

Made from 100% Sangiovese, Vicoregio 36 showcases the complexity and elegance that can be achieved when different expressions of the variety are brought together in one exceptional vineyard. The 2019 vintage offers an impressive aromatic profile of ripe cherry, wild strawberry and red plum, layered with violet, rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco, liquorice and subtle spice. On the palate, it is refined yet powerful, with vibrant acidity, polished tannins, remarkable depth and a long, mineral-driven finish. A true Gran Selezione, it combines the classic identity of Chianti Classico with the structure and complexity of a great cellar-worthy Tuscan red. It pairs beautifully with traditional Tuscan cuisine, wild boar, grilled meats, aged cheeses, truffle dishes and rich pasta preparations.
