Description

Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta is a historic Rioja producer founded in 1895 by Félix Martínez Lacuesta in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta. One of the region’s centenarian family-owned wineries, it played an active role in the early establishment of the Rioja regulatory system and has remained in the same family for generations, maintaining a commitment to traditional Rioja identity while evolving its vineyards and facilities. The estate works with vineyards spread across Rioja Alta, selecting fruit from old Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo vines planted on clay-limestone soils, which contribute both structure and aromatic complexity. Viticulture largely follows long-established sustainable practices rather than formal organic or biodynamic certification. The 2010 vintage in Rioja was considered very strong, combining good seasonal balance with extended oak ageing that helped produce refined, well-structured wines with excellent ageing potential.

Martínez Lacuesta Rioja Gran Reserva 2010 is a classically crafted Gran Reserva is composed of 100% Tempranillo sourced from vineyards with average vine ages around 40 years. Following manual harvesting, the wine undergoes traditional fermentation and then an extended ageing regime, spending 36 months in new and semi-new American oak barrels followed by 48 months of bottle ageing before release, contributing to its depth, complexity and integration of oak and fruit. In the glass it shows a dark cherry colour with an orange rim, opening with aromas of sweet spices, ripe black fruits, leather, tobacco and hints of roasted nuts. The palate is velvety and well-structured with polished tannins, balanced acidity and a long, persistent finish. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, game, grilled meats, rich stews and mature cheeses. Now entering a mature drinking window, the 2010 continues to offer vibrant fruit alongside tertiary complexity and can evolve further in bottle.
