Marthe Henry Meursault 'Sous la Velle' 2023
Produced by Marthe Henry, a Meursault-based vigneronne and granddaughter of the respected grower Pierre Boillot, Meursault Sous la Velle 2023 reflects both deep family roots in the Côte de Beaune and a precise, modern interpretation of Burgundy. After training in Beaune and working with respected producers across the region, Henry launched her own small-scale project in 2017, focusing on carefully selected parcels and a philosophy of sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy is widely regarded as generous yet balanced, offering wines with ripe fruit, good freshness and immediate charm despite warm growing conditions. Sous la Velle, from a historic site at the foot of the Meursault slope on clay-limestone soils, captures both the richness of the vintage and the mineral tension of the appellation.
The wine is vinified in a restrained style with a notably patient élevage of around 18 to 24 months in older Burgundian barrels, without new oak influence or bâtonnage, allowing texture and complexity to build gradually while preserving precision and purity. The 2023 shows aromas of ripe citrus, white peach and pear alongside acacia blossom, toasted hazelnut and wet stone. The palate is layered and finely structured, combining generous orchard fruit with vibrant acidity and a chalky mineral backbone. Already expressive yet still tightly knit, it has the balance and depth to evolve gracefully over the next 8 to 15 years, developing additional nuance and complexity with time in bottle.
