Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2018
Bodegas Luis Cañas has long been a leading producer in Rioja Alavesa, with vineyards sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria mountains. The vines grow on chalky-clay soils at altitudes of 450–600 m, producing small, concentrated grapes. The estate cultivates many old, low-yield plots under sustainable, organic-leaning viticulture, and the 2018 Gran Reserva is officially listed as organic and vegan friendly.
The 2018 Luis Cañas Rioja Gran Reserva is a blend of approximately 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano. Grapes are hand-selected, destemmed and fermented in stainless steel, followed by 24 months ageing in new French and American oak barrels. The wine shows black cherry, plum, tobacco leaf and leather, layered with spice and cedar, firm yet elegant tannins and great depth. It pairs wonderfully with roast lamb, stews, grilled red meats or mature cheeses.
