Description

Produced by R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, Viña Bosconia Reserva is one of the great traditional wines of Rioja and a remarkable expression of a house style that has changed little since the winery was founded in 1877. Still family-owned and managed by the fourth generation, López de Heredia is regarded as one of Spain’s most historic and uncompromising producers, maintaining long ageing periods, extensive manual rackings and the use of its own cooperage to craft the American oak barrels used throughout the cellar. Viña Bosconia is sourced from the historic El Bosque vineyard, a site of around fifteen hectares situated alongside the River Ebro in Rioja Alta. The combination of alluvial soils with limestone and clay, together with the moderating Atlantic influence, produces wines of elegance, freshness and exceptional longevity.

Traditionally based on Tempranillo and complemented by Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, the blend reflects the classic field-blend philosophy that has long defined Rioja. Fermentation takes place in old oak vats, followed by extended ageing in American oak barrels and many additional years in bottle before release, far exceeding the minimum requirements for the Reserva category. This patient approach creates a wine where youthful fruit evolves into a complex tapestry of secondary and tertiary aromas. Notes of red cherry, wild strawberry and dried cranberry are layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, vanilla, forest floor and sweet spices, while the palate combines silky tannins with vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish. More refined than powerful, Viña Bosconia Reserva is a timeless expression of classical Rioja, offering remarkable complexity, food-friendliness and the ability to age gracefully for decades.
