Produced by La Rioja Alta, S.A., Viña Alberdi is one of Rioja’s classic wines and an enduring benchmark for traditionally styled Reserva. Founded in 1890 by a group of Rioja and Basque families, the winery has played a central role in shaping the identity of the region, building its reputation on meticulous vineyard selection, long ageing and an unwavering commitment to quality. Unlike many modern producers, La Rioja Alta continues to champion the classical Rioja model, including the use of its own cooperage to craft American oak barrels that form an integral part of the house style. The fruit for Viña Alberdi is sourced primarily from the estate’s vineyards in Rioja Alta, where clay-limestone soils and the cooling Atlantic influence produce Tempranillo of elegance, freshness and aromatic complexity. Sustainable vineyard management and careful parcel selection ensure consistency while preserving the individuality of each vintage.
Made from 100% Tempranillo, Viña Alberdi is aged extensively in American oak barrels, with regular rackings carried out according to the traditional methods that have defined the winery for more than a century. This long élevage allows the fruit and oak to integrate seamlessly, creating a wine that is approachable on release yet capable of graceful ageing. Aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and plum are complemented by classic Rioja notes of vanilla, cedar, coconut, tobacco leaf and sweet baking spices. The palate is polished and harmonious, with silky tannins, lively acidity and a refined savoury finish that reflects the freshness of Rioja Alta. Elegant rather than powerful, Viña Alberdi has become one of the region’s great reference points, offering a timeless expression of traditional Rioja and exceptional value within the category.
