Domaine de la Pousse d’Or is one of Burgundy’s most historic estates, based in Volnay in the Côte de Beaune, with origins dating back centuries and a modern revival under the stewardship of winemaker Patrick Landanger since the 1990s. The estate is certified biodynamic and has long been committed to organic viticulture, focusing on expressing the purity and energy of its premier cru sites through meticulous vineyard work and low intervention winemaking. The Santenay 1er Cru “Clos de Tavannes” lies at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, on the border with Chassagne-Montrachet, and is one of the most prestigious vineyards in Santenay. This 2.1-hectare walled climat sits on stony limestone and marl soils that share geological similarities with neighbouring Chassagne, giving the wine greater precision and mineral depth than is typical for the appellation. The 2022 vintage in Burgundy was warm and sunny, producing ripe, generous fruit while retaining freshness and balance in well managed sites such as this.

This wine is made from Pinot Noir sourced from very old vines, some planted as early as 1920, contributing significant depth and concentration. The fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and vinification is carried out gently using gravity to preserve fruit integrity. The wine is aged for around 15-18 months in French oak barrels, with a restrained proportion of approximately 20% new oak to ensure transparency of terroir. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The style is refined and classic, showing aromas of black cherry, raspberry, violet and subtle earthy notes of forest floor and fresh soil. The palate is medium bodied with silky, fine grained tannins, a supple texture and a distinct saline, mineral driven finish. It is drinking well now with a short decant but will develop further complexity over 8-12 years. Typical critical scores sit around 89–91 points from reviewers such as Allen Meadows, with praise for its “elegant structure, purity of fruit and discreet mineral tension for the appellation.”
