La Maison Romane Cote de Nuits 2021
La Maison Romane is the artisanal négociant project of Oronce de Beler, based in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Established in the mid 2000s, the domaine is dedicated to producing small batch, traditionally styled Pinot Noir with a strong focus on transparency, site expression and minimal intervention. The Côte de Nuits Villages 2021 is sourced from old vine parcels between 40 and 90 years of age in Brochon, adjacent to Gevrey-Chambertin and Comblanchien (Les Loges). These sites sit on classic clay limestone soils, with Comblanchien in particular known for deeper clay layers that bring silkiness and mid-palate density. The 2021 Burgundy vintage was heavily impacted by spring frosts and mildew, resulting in very low yields but wines of cool climate tension, aromatic lift and classical structure. Total production was extremely limited at just 1,115 bottles. The vineyards are farmed by growers working in organic and biodynamic principles, often with minimal chemical input and traditional practices such as horse ploughing.
This Côte de Nuits-Villages 2021 is made from Pinot Noir that follows Oronce de Beler’s signature natural winemaking approach. Fermentation is carried out with 100% whole clusters using native yeasts, enhancing aromatic complexity, herbal spice and structural definition. The wine is aged for approximately 12 months in old French oak barrels to preserve purity of fruit and avoid overt oak influence. It is bottled without fining or filtration and with zero or only minimal sulphur additions, sealed by hand with wax. The result is a vibrant, high-toned Pinot Noir showing red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and wild strawberry aromas, lifted by stem-derived spice and floral perfume. The palate is energetic and finely textured, with a silky mouthfeel, cool precision and a saline, mineral finish. It is approachable now with a short decant but will evolve over 6-10 years, gaining complexity and savoury depth.”
