Kershaw Elgin Clonal Selection Chardonnay 2021
Kershaw Wines is a boutique winery and the personal project of English born Master of Wine Richard Kershaw, based in the cool climate Elgin Valley of South Africa. Established in 2012, the winery focuses on limited production, site specific wines that are crafted with meticulous precision. Kershaw is especially renowned for producing world class Chardonnay and Syrah that highlight Elgin’s unique terroir. Kershaw focuses on expressing terroir through clonal selection and low intervention viticulture, sourcing grapes from small vineyard parcels with well drained Bokkeveld Shale and Cartref soils that bring mineral precision to the wines. The estate’s winemaking emphasises purity and elegance in every bottle.
The Clonal Selection Chardonnay 2021 is 100% Chardonnay, using Dijon and Entav clones, from France, selected for balance and complexity. Hand picked grapes are whole bunch pressed and undergo spontaneous fermentation, then mature for around 11 months in French oak barrels with judicious use of new oak to complement natural acidity. The wine shows lifted lemon and orchard fruit, mineral chalk and subtle spice from oak integration, finishing long and refined. The freshness and texture of the wine give it excellent food versatility, pairing beautifully with seafood, creamy pasta dishes, poultry, and soft cheeses.
