Kanaan Winery was founded in 2011 by Wang Fang, who returned to China after twelve years abroad, including time in Germany where she developed her passion for Riesling. Her decision to grow the variety in Ningxia was considered highly ambitious: the vineyards lie above 1,000 metres on the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains, in an intensely arid climate with very little rainfall and striking differences between daytime and night-time temperatures. These conditions allow Riesling to develop flavour and concentration while the cool nights help preserve the acidity essential to the variety. The 2022 vintage was particularly dry, with abundant sunshine and lower-than-usual rainfall, resulting in concentrated fruit and naturally healthy grapes.
Made from 100% Riesling, the grapes were hand harvested and whole-bunch pressed before undergoing a three-to-five-day cold soak. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks over approximately one week, with no oak ageing, keeping the wine's fruit and freshness completely exposed. Dry at 2.9 g/L residual sugar, the 2022 combines grapefruit, green apple, lime blossom and nectarine with a subtle Riesling-derived petrol note. Bright and zesty, the palate has a surprisingly rounded texture, lively 6.8 g/L acidity and a clean, persistent finish. It is a compelling example of how Ningxia can produce Riesling with its own identity rather than simply imitating European styles.
